Dr John Yu (FSBHS 1949-1953). He was born in China in 1934 and came to Australia with his family in 1937. He received education in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney. In 1972-97 he was Chief Executive of the Royal Alexandria Hospital for Children and then the new Children’s Hospital, Westmead. Later he was elected Deputy-Chancellor of Western Sydney University (1998-2000) and Chancellor UNSW, Sydney (2000-2005). In 1996 he was named Australian of the Year. The conversation covers his time growing up in Australia under the White Australian Policy; his life at Fort Street High School, his work in paediatrics; his engagement with museums and civil society organisations; and his extra curricula activities.
