On 5 October 2022, Michael Kirby delivered the Harry Herbert Memorial Oration at St Stephen’s Church in Sydney.

The Oration is named after the late Harry Herbert AO, an innovative Minister in the Uniting Church of Australia and contributor to drug law reform in this country.

The lecture addresses the variable impact of religious beliefs on law and policy on drug use.  He especially played a strong role in the opening of the medically supervised Injecting Drug Centre that has operated in Kings Cross, Sydney for some years.  He contributed subsequent changes in drug law and policy throughout Australia.
