This event marked up public lecture on ‘’A Human Rights Act for New South Wales ‘’ given by the Honourable Michael Kirby, sponsored by the NSW Bar Association and the Sydney Law School. The lecture explains why Australia has generally rejected the proposal for a constitutional or statutory Bill of Rights. It also explains why it cannot be left to Parliament to address all defects in our legal rights protections. There is a need to supplement common law and statutory protections by enacting a general Bill of Rights for New South Wales. The speaker explains why he came around to supporting this proposal. He gives several illustrations.’’
