On 1 October 2021, The Hon Michael Kirby, by video link, launched a new book by Linda Rhodes: Beyond the Rainbow: A Study of What It Really Means to Be Gay (Austin Macauley publishers, London, 2021).

The author was a nurse and worked in a mining industry. Because of incidents affecting her work and her family, she came to the conclusion that she should investigate and report on the injustice and discrimination against LGBTIQ people.

She does this by reference to historical individuals and also to the stories of people she has known. In this witty and perceptive launching speech, Michael Kirby describes the book and why it is timely and useful. The launch took place at Beaufort Street Bookshop  in Perth, WA, and shows that book launches need not be boring or solemn.
