The History from Australian TV in the 1980-90s, at a time when Australia was making social acceptance of gay Australians and the realities of their lives. A prominent television soap opera, Number 96 was highly successful and popular. It portrayed the reality of most gay lives in a realistic and sympathetic fashion. This was most evident in Number 96 where the lead actor, Joe Hasham, playing a gay lawyer, was often the only sane and rational character in the series. The Hon. Michael Kirby, a retired Justice of the High Court of Australia, describes the impact of Number 96 upon him and his partner Johan. And the way in which it portrayed issues at the time of HIV/AIDs pandemic.
