In this podcast, the Hon. Michael Kirby, past Justice of the High Court of Australia, describes the issues of sexual orientation and gender identity. The interview which originated in Mexico concerned national and international law; sexuality; and why there have not been more judges both in common law and civil law countries, who are open about their sexuality; and the extent to which denying inherent freedoms in personal relationships may sometimes affect the attitudes of judges and lawyers towards minorities and their fundamental rights to equality and dignity.
The interview was conducted by Ibrain Hernández on Friday 21 August 2026. He expresses the opinion that the small book of private reflections written by Michael Kirby and published in 2011 A Private Life (2011, Allen & Unwin) should be translated into Spanish so it is available to lawyers in Latin America.
