Sir,

As a first year law student at Flinders University, I cannot tell you how many fans you have. Your clear and concise judgements have made my first year much, much easier. Other than this, as I read more cases I begin to realise what a fantastic Justice you were - so although I will miss your headings, I think that Australia will miss your passion for human rights and bravery to dissent, even as a lone voice. Thank you, and PLEASE come back to Flinders again, there are plenty of people who would love to see you - plus, I would bake you a cake, which I VERY rarely do, in a flavour of your choice; you have my email adress :).

Dan.

Dear Justice Kirby

Thank you very much for the warmth and generosity of your presence in Australia and the world generally, and in Lismore with Adrien Wing on Friday specifically.

By virtue of my charm and homelessness, I was given the leftovers of your birthday cake (score!). It made its way to the Circle in Byron Bay the next morning. "District Court judge, is he?" said one of the blackfellas as he took a slice...

I wish you all the guidance and stamina you need for the next phase of your career, which I expect will be no less important to this nation than your judicial legacy.

Thank you.

Dear Justice Kirby,

I would like to wish you a very happy belated birthday! If there was ever a jurist in Australia (and indeed, the world!) who truly brought excitement to the lecture rooms of a whole generation of law students – it would have to be you.

Thank you for inspiring all of us... as you once wrote in my copy of 'Dissent', the inaugural SULS social justice journal which you launched in 2006: 'Always remain idealistic - I have'.

My very best wishes,
Mimi

It truly is a shame that our constitution limits such brilliant jurists to a term of 70 years of age today - US Supreme Court Judge John Paul Stevens is still delivering eloquent and relevant opinions at 89 years of age. Shame on Australia for not keeping up with the times. Amend the constitution to bring back Kirby!

You will not remember me. I was on the Committee for Debates in the Union between 1964 and 1966, enjoying those times when you spoke along with Jim Poulos, Geoffrey Robertson and the others. Good times. I moved into opera and came to the USA to work at the Metropolitan Opera and now run San Diego Opera in California. But even at this distance I have enjoyed reading your speeches over the many years and look forward to reading the new book. I wish you good health.

Dear Mr Kirby
You have been an inspiration to Australians everywhere, we will miss you being so much a part of the High Court as your decisions for those who had to fight so hard for justice in this country were always given with regard to not only the letter of law but the true spirit of the law, and that will be hard to replace.

Thank you for all you have done for us all especially those not in the profession.

May you and your partner find the rest of you days blessed with peace and joy.

Elizabeth

I've had to revert to this website now, as before I used to read your speeches from time to time on the HCA website!

I most especially want to say that I was honoured that you attended the most meagre of University's Law Balls - the UWS Law Ball -in 2007. To have a High Court Justice come to such a function was inspiring to say the least. Your speech was equally as inspiring.

Many thanks!

Please Mr Kirby, will you please do me and everyone else at RMIT University the honour of teaching one of the units for the Juris Doctor at our law school? I can ask the co-ordinator, but I am sure she will say yes anyway...

You are one of the greatest and most humorous orators I have ever known. I always love ready your work.
