It seems all the good adjectives have been used up! So perhaps I should just thank you for your contribution to our country and, as others have said, variously, long may you continue to contribute.

Thank you so much for what you've done for Australia law. You remain a gigantic source of inspiration when I'm struggling to read through textbooks and find your name suddenly pop up to remind me of why I should keep studying - justice and equality. May your 'retirement' be filled with amazing adventures and last well past the age of 101!!

Justice Kirby,
I'm disappointed to have commenced my law degree at the tail end of your period on the High Court. All of your judgments, especially the 6-1 (or 6-Kirby) ones, speak wonders about your impeccable ethical standards, exuding thoughtfulness and care. As a student I implore you to run for the academic world in your retirement, as quickly as possible! I wish you the best of luck in your retirement.

Dear Mr Kirby,

I'm a student in Yr 12 at the moment, and up until very recently, law hadn't been one of the things I was planning on studying after I'd finished school. However, after seeing your keynote address at the Activating Human Rights and Peace Conference in Byron Bay last year on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and then hearing Professor Adrien Wing sing your praises, I've decided that law is exactly what I want to do. It is inspirational people like you that have made me realise that my passion for Human Rights is something I can create real and significant change with. And I want to achieve the same level of change that you've made, because I truly believe that this world can be a fundamentally fair and just and equitous place where everyone has a chance to live to their full potential, whatever their circumstances.

Thank you so much for your inspiration, your dedication, your sheer amazingness! You're a true Australian hero and I am sure you will continue to be for a long time yet!

Sir,

As a first year law student at Flinders University, I cannot tell you how many fans you have. Your clear and concise judgements have made my first year much, much easier. Other than this, as I read more cases I begin to realise what a fantastic Justice you were - so although I will miss your headings, I think that Australia will miss your passion for human rights and bravery to dissent, even as a lone voice. Thank you, and PLEASE come back to Flinders again, there are plenty of people who would love to see you - plus, I would bake you a cake, which I VERY rarely do, in a flavour of your choice; you have my email adress :).

Dear Justice Kirby

Thank you very much for the warmth and generosity of your presence in Australia and the world generally, and in Lismore with Adrien Wing on Friday specifically.

By virtue of my charm and homelessness, I was given the leftovers of your birthday cake (score!). It made its way to the Circle in Byron Bay the next morning. "District Court judge, is he?" said one of the blackfellas as he took a slice...

I wish you all the guidance and stamina you need for the next phase of your career, which I expect will be no less important to this nation than your judicial legacy.

Thank you.

Dear Justice Kirby,

I would like to wish you a very happy belated birthday! If there was ever a jurist in Australia (and indeed, the world!) who truly brought excitement to the lecture rooms of a whole generation of law students – it would have to be you.

Thank you for inspiring all of us... as you once wrote in my copy of 'Dissent', the inaugural SULS social justice journal which you launched in 2006: 'Always remain idealistic - I have'.

My very best wishes,
Mimi
